Supporting the family before it’s even started

Did you know that a recent study found that of those experiencing infertility, 47% had not been open about their struggles at work? And of those, only 29% felt supported by their employer.

Just like other medical conditions, infertility drains employees emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. But many of those suffering keep it to themselves. Fertility issues not only have a negative effect on mental health, but can also hinder women in their career, as they worry about the impact family planning may have on their job role and security.

That's why Parents At Work have partnered with world-leading fertility group Genea and pregnancy loss support network Pink Elephants to provide a new support page on our members' Online Learning Platform called Family Planning.

It’s crucial to normalise conversations about planning a family and infertility. One way to do that is to provide information and support to your employees about this part of their family experience, in the same way we provide information about other facets of family/work life.

The new Family Planning section will support women and men in their journey to start a family, with informative toolkits, podcasts and other resources aimed to provide families with an inclusive environment and support network during what can be an isolating time.

It is imperative that organisations provide an inclusive workplace that visibly supports employees through family planning and beyond, and by doing so they help to retain talent and promote an environment that is supportive - particularly for those who may be experience pregnancy complications, early pregnancy loss or miscarriage. These Family Planning resources are a way that workplaces can ensure their employees feel valued and understood, throughout all aspects of their parenting journey.

The Family Planning section covers topics such as Fertility facts and misconceptions, Assisted Conception, Pregnancy Complications, Emotional Support, Early Pregnancy Loss and Partner Support.
